From brown, chalky marl on shell limestone soil with lots of iron and manganese, the 2015 Zieregg Sauvignon Blanc Dreieck has a very clear, fascinatingly pure, iron-rich and refined bouquet with an intense flintiness and smokiness—almost crystalline, in fact. Highly elegant and finessed on the palate, this is a great, piquant and stimulating terroir wine of great complexity, exceptional finesse and persistency. Although still marked by its chalky tannins, the finish is pure and endlessly salty. This is one of the greatest white wines I have ever tasted from Austria (in May 2017). The wine will be bottled in September and marketed in autumn this year, but only in a box with the other two single plot bottlings—Steinbruch and Weisse Wand. By Stephan Reinhardt August 2017
